THINGS TO KNOW
Uganda Gorilla Trekking FAQS
1. What Is Uganda Gorilla Trekking?
Uganda Gorilla trekking offers an unforgettable adventure where small groups of visitors hike through lush, dense rainforests to find and observe wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Experienced rangers and skilled trackers lead the way, allowing you to spend an incredible hour with a habituated gorilla family, watching them as they feed, play, and interact just a few meters away.
Many describe it as one of the most amazing wildlife experiences on the planet, making it a must-do when visiting Uganda, often referred to as the Pearl of Africa.
2. Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place in Uganda?
You can embark on your gorilla trekking adventure in two stunning national parks:
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park serves as the main hotspot for gorilla trekking. Nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda, this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans 331 square kilometers of ancient, misty rainforest and hosts nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. You can trek across four different sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is smaller but equally breathtaking. Located in the Virunga Volcanoes, it houses the Nyakagezi family, offering a more intimate trekking experience amidst dramatic volcanic scenery.
3. How Much Does a Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit Cost?
A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs USD 700 for foreign non-residents. If you’re a foreign resident, it costs USD 600, and for East African citizens, it’s UGX 250,000.
This permit, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), covers your park entry fee, ranger guiding fees, and that precious one-hour encounter with the gorillas. Keep in mind that this fee is non-negotiable and directly supports gorilla conservation and community development initiatives.
4. How Do I Get a Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda?
You can obtain your gorilla trekking permit in a couple of ways. You can either book directly through the UWA offices in Kampala or online via their website.
For a hassle-free experience, consider using a licensed tour operator like Ssabwe Africa Safaris, who can manage all the details for you, including confirming your preferred date and sector as part of your safari package.
Just a heads up: permits tend to sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (June to August and December to February), so it’s best to book at least three to six months in advance to secure your spot.
5. How Physically Demanding Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
The physical demands of gorilla trekking can vary from moderate to quite strenuous, depending on the sector and where the gorilla family has wandered that day. Treks can last anywhere from one to eight hours, often involving steep, muddy trails through thick vegetation at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to over 2,500 meters above sea level.
The Buhoma sector usually offers more moderate treks, while Ruhija and Nkuringo are known for their challenging terrain. You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Be sure to pack sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and some gardening gloves for pushing through the underbrush.
If you have mobility challenges, Bwindi offers sedan chair porter services to help you navigate the tougher sections of the forest.
6. What Is the Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years. The UWA strictly enforces this rule to protect both the gorillas and younger visitors. Children under 15 cannot join the treks, as the physical demands and close proximity to large wild animals require a level of maturity that younger kids might struggle with.
7. How Many People Trek with One Gorilla Family Per Day?
To minimize stress on the gorillas and reduce the risk of disease transmission, a maximum of 8 visitors can trek with one gorilla family each day. Each group is accompanied by at least two armed UWA rangers and a lead tracker, plus optional porters. This small group size ensures a personal and immersive experience that feels special.
8. How Long Do You Spend with the Gorillas?
Once you find the gorilla family, you’ll have exactly one hour to spend with them. This time limit is strictly enforced for the well-being of the gorillas.
During your hour, you can observe, take photos, and soak in the incredible experience of being up close with these gentle giants. Rangers will brief you on proper behavior, including maintaining a minimum distance of seven meters from the gorillas—though the gorillas might not always stick to that rule!
9. What Are the Rules During a Gorilla Trekking Encounter?
You must follow important guidelines during your gorilla trekking encounter. Keep at least seven meters away from the gorillas at all times, and avoid flash photography since it can startle them. Eating, drinking, or smoking near the gorillas is also prohibited. If a gorilla approaches you, stay calm, crouch down, avoid direct eye contact, and follow your ranger’s instructions. Loud noises, sudden movements, and pointing directly at the gorillas should be avoided. Anyone showing signs of illness, especially respiratory issues, may be turned away to protect the gorillas.
10. What Should I Wear and Pack for a Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari?
Packing wisely can significantly enhance your gorilla trekking experience. Essential items include waterproof, ankle-support hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against insects and vegetation, a waterproof rain jacket or poncho, gardening gloves for pushing through thorny undergrowth, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and some energy snacks. A small daypack is also handy. Opt for neutral or dark-colored clothing—bright colors and white are best avoided. And don’t forget a good camera with a zoom lens to capture those close-up moments without getting too close!
11. Is Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Safe?
Absolutely! Gorilla trekking in Uganda remains very safe when you go through the right official channels with licensed operators and UWA-accredited rangers. Mountain gorillas generally exhibit gentle behavior, and attacks on humans are extremely rare. The rangers are highly trained professionals who know the gorillas well and can read their behavior. As long as you follow the briefing instructions and stay calm, you’ll have a safe and memorable experience. Just remember that the trek itself comes with the usual risks of hiking in remote forest terrain, so proper footwear and physical preparation are key.
12. What Is the Best Time of Year to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda falls during the two dry seasons: June to August and December to February. These months offer drier forest trails, making trekking easier and providing better conditions for photography. However, gorilla trekking remains a year-round activity—there are always gorillas to be found, regardless of the season. The wetter months (March to May and September to November) bring lush green forests, fewer crowds, and sometimes lower accommodation rates, making them appealing for budget-conscious travelers.
13. Can I Combine Gorilla Trekking with Other Activities in Uganda?
Definitely! Many visitors choose to combine their gorilla trekking adventure with other amazing wildlife and cultural experiences. Popular options include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, game drives and boat cruises in Queen Elizabeth National Park, the thrilling Murchison Falls boat trip, big five wildlife viewing at Lake Mburo National Park, Batwa cultural experiences near Bwindi, white-water rafting on the Nile at Jinja, and birdwatching throughout Uganda’s diverse ecosystems.
Ssabwe Africa Safaris specializes in creating seamless multi-destination itineraries that blend gorilla trekking with the rich tapestry of Uganda’s natural and cultural heritage.
